ideology

Ideology.

Ideology:
Ideology is a set of beliefs, values and idea's of a particular group.

Karl Marx developed the idea that 'Property owning class protected their interests by representing the hierarchical class structure, based on ownership of the means of production as natural'. Our trailer includes working class culture as is portraying the characters as what is typically expected of working class youths, for example, hoodies, violence and bullying.

A popular Hollywood narrative is the American dream, this is the belief that if you are prepared to work hard then you will succeed. This concludeds that the rich people are the ones who have worked hard to get where they are, whereas, the poor people do not work hard resulting in them being poor.

theories on representation and subcultures

Representation theories.
Representation:
All media products re-present the real world, however, they only show one version of reality, not a true view of reality itself.
A major theorist involved within representation is Stuart Hall. He quotes that 'The power to represent the world in certain ways. And because there are so many different and conflicting ways in which meaning about the world can be constructing, it matters profoundly, what and who gets left out, and how things, people, events and relationships are represented'.

Stuart Hall's quote fits in with our trailer as the teenagers are being represented as what is typically seen in the media which is negatively, for example, hoodies, gang crime and violence.
Another representation theorist is Richard Dyer (1993) who argues that representation is a political tool. 'How social groups are treated in cultural representation is part and parcel of how they are treated in life, that poverty, harassment, self-hate and discrimination are shored up and instituted by representation'.
Richard Dyer's quote also ties in with our trailer as the teenagers are evidently from working class backgrounds so they are behaving how they are expected to behave.

the finished trailer and analysis

The Finished Trailer.

We started off our trailer with our production logo 'THRILL'ER CLOCK' , this would automatically indicate to the audience one of the genre's of our film (thriller). We decided that the best way to get our narrative across to the audience was to use a voice over of Jamie who plays Jake explaining his side to the story, this would make the audience sympathise with his as he's telling the story. We also thought that it would be a good idea to put some key words such as 'SUICIDE', 'BULLIED' and 'AVENGE', these are the main features as to what happens in out trailer so it creates more sympathy for Josh who plays Stuart.

We used a range of shots in order to create pace and tension in our trailer. One shot that I thought we used exceptionally well was the cupboard shot where Josh is getting the pills just before he commits suicide. This shot allows the audience to see a close up of Josh's face so that they can see that he isn't happy. It also creates suspense as you don't know what he is getting out of the cupboard so the audience would be thinking 'whats he getting?'. Another shot in which was used really well was the bit where the camera was going around Josh's head, this created the illusion that the audience was going round Josh's head as he doesn't know what he is thinking, this shot connotes that his head is all over the place. A match on action shot is used when Jamie grabs the knife after he finds Josh dead. This is also an action enigma code as when he grabs the knife, the audience know that something is about to happen. An editing technique that we decided to try out was when Jamie went to stab Jack, we used a slow motion edit so it emphasises the force behind Jamie going to stab him. The final shot, we decided to use a panning shot going from the bottom half of Jamie, upwards. We used this to remind the audience that Jamie is a typical working class youth as he is wearing a track suit.

The music in the first half of the trailer is a fast paced piece which runs creates pace while Stuart is being bullied. After Stuart has committed suicide, the music changes into a dark, triumphant piece which compliments Jake getting revenge on the people who bullied his brother. The music plays a big part in the pace of the trailer as it helps create suspense and keeps the audience guessing what might happen next.

magazine front cover

Step by step - how the magazine front cover was made.

As a group, we decided that Jamie and Josh was going to produce the magazine front cover, while Lela and I was going to make the film poster for our film. Although Josh and Jamie produced the magazine front cover, Lela and I contributed to some of the idea's.

We found that on most film magazines such as empire, they have a circle with imformation that will attract the audience's attention. We thought that the film strip at the bottom of the page clearly identified that the magazine is a film magazine.
We decided to call the magazine 'MOTION' as it is origional and catchy. We researched other magazine's and found that no-one else has a magazine called motion so we decided that this was a good name for our magazine. The font of the masthead is big and bold, this makes it stand out on the page and catches your eye first. The connotations of the colour gold is 'number one' so by having a gold title, it could connote that it is of good quality.
We found that almost every magazine has a skyline at the top of the magazine, it gives the audience more of an insight to the magazine.

The name of the film is essential to have on the front cover as it is the main feature of a film in which the audience will recognise. The white text stands out on the black background which also makes it stand out further. The price and the date of the issue is not a main feature of a magazine, therefore it does not need to be in a big font.

As a group, we really liked the idea of the film strip at the bottom of the magazine as the audience would instantly be able to identify the magazine was obviously a film magazine.

The first image of the film strip, we got off of google, so we decided to be original and design our own on paint so that we could insert our own films into the white spaces.

The first film that we made up is called 'Santa baby'. We used the website 'fontspace' to create this font. It initially stood out to us because it looked like a festive font so we decided to create a Christmas film to go with it. Also, the colour red connotes Santa clause and his red suit.
We then chose an image of Santa to go with the font. The picture we chose looks like an old photograph which could connote that it is a traditional family Christmas film.

This is the film we did for our AS project, we thought it would be a good idea to include it within our film strip so it gives a variety of film genre's.

This is what the film strip looked like after we had inserted the two film pictures.
For the third film, we chose to do a romcom to add even more variety. We decided to call it '10 ways to say goodbye'. We chose the font from fontspace. The colour of the text is a sky blue, this connotes freedom as the sky is an open space.

We decided to put the '10 ways to say...', on top of this image so that it flows. The use of the 'good bye' being written with a pen could mean that the person is writing what they feel.
Shot wound is based on an action adventure genre. We chose the font from font space as it is big and bold so it could mean that it is going to be a film which stands out. It is clear that the target audience is more likely going to be male because f the title of the film and the dark colours.
The image we chose to go with shot wound is a silhouette figure of someone holding a gun. This image is mysterious and would leave the audience wondering who it is holding the gun and the motive behind it.

For the final film to put into our fil strip, we chose to do an animated cartoon film. The colours connote happiness and the font is clearly aimed at a younger audience because of the swirls.
This is the finished product once all of the images were inserted into the film strip. The films in which we created are of all a different genre so that it appeals to a mainstream audience.
This is our finished copy of 'MOTION' magazine.
